The Security Theater Problem
Home security has developed a category of products that provide the feeling of security without the substance of it — security cameras that record burglaries already in progress, decorative security signs that sophisticated intruders ignore, smart doorbells that notify you on vacation when someone is already inside your house. These products sell well because security anxiety is real and because visible security features that don’t require behavior change are appealing.
Actual residential security research identifies a much shorter list of measures that meaningfully reduce burglary risk — and the most effective ones are not the most marketed.
The Research-Based Priority: Door and Lock Strength
The vast majority of residential burglaries involve forced entry through a door — not window jimmying, not lock picking, but simple physical forcing of a door that looks solid but isn’t. The weakest point in most residential doors is not the lock cylinder but the door frame and the strike plate that the deadbolt engages.
Standard door frames use a strike plate held by 3/4-inch screws into the door jamb. A single kick can split the door jamb and fold the strike plate regardless of the quality of the lock. The upgrade: replace the strike plate with a heavy-gauge reinforced strike plate (ANSI Grade 1 or Security Strike) using 3-inch screws that penetrate through the jamb and into the structural framing behind it. This single $20 hardware change dramatically increases kick resistance. Reinforce sliding doors with a bar in the track and pins through the frame — sliding doors are the second most common forced entry point.
Lighting as a Deterrent: What Actually Works
Outdoor lighting deters opportunistic burglaries — the profile of most residential break-ins — by eliminating concealment. The effective lighting strategy is motion-activated lighting that covers all approach paths to doors and windows, specifically the areas where someone approaching without legitimate purpose would pass.
Continuous outdoor lighting (always-on porch lights) is less effective as a deterrent than motion-activated because it becomes background scenery that neighbors and passersby stop registering. A light that turns on is a visible event that attracts attention. Motion-activated LED floodlights on a timer (not constantly triggered by wind and animals, which causes neighbors to stop paying attention) create the deterrent effect reliably.
Social Exposure: The Underestimated Variable
Burglars select targets partly by opportunity and partly by risk of detection. The highest-risk situation for a burglar is being seen and remembered by a neighbor — which is a product of neighborhood social density (how many people know each other and pay attention to unusual activity) rather than technology.
Neighborhood Watch programs work not through deterrence signs but through the actual social infrastructure of neighbors who notice and report suspicious activity. Knowing your immediate neighbors, greeting them regularly, and establishing implicit mutual awareness of each other’s normal patterns — who’s usually home, what vehicles belong — creates a social security system that no camera app replaces.
The Vacation Protocol That Most People Skip
Unoccupied homes are dramatically higher burglary targets than occupied ones — the risk of detecting the burglar drops to near zero. The visual indicators that a home is unoccupied: lights never on in the evening, mail overflowing, newspapers accumulating, no vehicle movement for days, no footprints in fresh snow at the door.
Effective vacation protocol: mail and newspaper holds, light timers on multiple interior lights on different schedules, parking a vehicle in the driveway if possible, asking a neighbor to park there or to use your driveway, maintaining your lawn and walks during extended absence, and asking a neighbor to vary which lights are on. These behavioral measures don’t cost anything and address the primary factor that makes vacation periods higher-risk: visual evidence of prolonged absence.
