Faucet replacement is among the most achievable DIY plumbing projects — more achievable than most homeowners assume and requiring fewer specialized tools than most other plumbing work. A bathroom sink faucet replacement that would cost $150–$300 in plumber labor (plus the faucet) can typically be completed in 30–90 minutes by a first-time DIYer with basic tools.

The main skill involved is not plumbing knowledge — it’s working in awkward, confined positions under a sink, which is a physical rather than technical challenge. The actual connections are simple supply line threads and drain linkage, neither of which requires specialized expertise.

Tools You Actually Need (And Those You Don’t)

The tools required for a standard faucet replacement: an adjustable basin wrench (the specialized tool designed for reaching the supply line nuts and faucet mounting nuts in the confined space under a sink — this is the one specialty tool that makes the difference between a manageable project and a maddening one), an adjustable plumber’s wrench, pliers, a bucket, and plumber’s putty or silicone (check which your new faucet requires).

Tools you don’t need: pipe solder, pipe cutters, a pipe wrench, or any cutting or joining equipment. The supply line connections are threaded; the faucet mounting is threaded; nothing requires cutting or soldering in a standard faucet swap. If you encounter soft copper supply lines without shut-off valves, that’s the one situation that requires either compression fittings or a plumber visit — but modern plumbing with supply valves at each fixture doesn’t present this scenario.

Before You Start: The Steps Most People Skip

Photograph the existing drain linkage assembly before disassembly. Drain linkage (the pop-up stopper mechanism operated by the pull rod behind the faucet) involves multiple rods, pivot points, and clips that can be difficult to reconstruct from memory if you forget how they interconnect. The photo takes 10 seconds and saves 30 minutes of trial and error.

Measure the faucet hole configuration before purchasing a replacement. Bathroom faucets come in single-hole configurations (one hole for the faucet and handles in one unit) and widespread configurations (three holes — one for the spout, one for each handle) with varying spacing. Buying a faucet before confirming your hole configuration and spacing is the most common procurement mistake in faucet projects.

The Supply Line Decision

When replacing a faucet, always replace the supply lines simultaneously even if the existing ones look acceptable. Braided stainless steel supply lines (the flexible hoses connecting the faucet to the shut-off valve) have a finite lifespan, and a supply line that bursts under a sink creates exactly the flooding scenario you want to avoid. New supply lines cost $5–$12 each and eliminating the risk of a near-future failure during a project where the supply lines are already disconnected is worthwhile every time.

Measure the existing supply line length before purchasing replacements — or choose 12-inch lines, which work in the majority of residential under-sink configurations. Don’t overtighten the supply line fittings: hand-tight plus a quarter turn with a wrench is the standard for these connections. Overtightening cracks the plastic or brass fittings and creates the leak you’re trying to prevent.

Testing the Installation: The Step That Prevents Disasters

After installation, open the shut-off valves slowly rather than fully at once — pressurizing the new connections gradually allows you to see any immediate leaks before the line is at full pressure. Keep a dry paper towel under the faucet body and at each supply line connection; a leak shows immediately as moisture on the towel.

Test the drain stopper linkage through its full range: pop the stopper up and down, run water to confirm the stopper seals fully when down and opens fully when up. A drain stopper that doesn’t seal fully is usually a simple linkage adjustment — the pivot rod under the sink can be moved to a different clip position to change the stopper travel range. Run water for two full minutes and inspect every connection before calling the project complete.
